If you're shopping for a GMC Sierra 1500 right now, you have an unusual decision to make. The 2026 Sierra 1500 is available today, while an extensively redesigned 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is on the way.
And this isn't a typical model-year change.
The 2027 Sierra introduces new V8 engines, more TurboMax power, a completely redesigned interior, larger displays, expanded Super Cruise availability, updated AT4X capability and significant changes to Denali and Denali Ultimate.
So what's actually different between the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2026 Sierra 1500? And are the changes important enough for you to wait?
Let's compare them.

The numbers make one thing clear: GMC made substantial changes for 2027, particularly with the gasoline engines, interior technology and availability of advanced driver-assistance features.
1. The 2027 Sierra Gets a Major Redesign
The easiest difference to spot is the exterior.
The 2026 Sierra carries the familiar styling of the current-generation truck. The 2027 Sierra moves to the next generation with a more upright appearance, a more vertical grille and redesigned lighting.
New 7-shaped headlamps and taillamps give the 2027 truck a different lighting signature, while available welcome and farewell animations and illuminated GMC signature lighting add to the new look.
But the important thing to understand is that the redesign isn't limited to sheet metal.
The engines, interior, displays, technology and equipment strategy have also changed.
2. 2027 vs. 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Engines
This is where the comparison gets particularly interesting.
2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Lineup
- TurboMax: 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque
- 5.3L EcoTec3 V8: 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque
- 6.2L EcoTec3 V8: 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque
- 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel: 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque
2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Lineup
- Enhanced TurboMax: 350 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque
- New 5.7L V8: 402 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque
- New 6.6L V8: 481 hp and 501 lb-ft of torque
- 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel: 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque
The overall formula remains familiar: TurboMax, two gasoline V8 choices and a Duramax diesel.
What's underneath that formula, however, changes considerably for 2027.
3. The Biggest Difference: New 5.7L and 6.6L V8 Engines
The 2026 Sierra offers the familiar 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engines.
For 2027, GMC replaces those with new sixth-generation 5.7L and 6.6L V8 engines.
2026 5.3L V8 vs. 2027 5.7L V8
The 2026 5.3L produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The new 2027 5.7L produces 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft.
That's an increase of 47 horsepower and 45 lb-ft of torque.
2026 6.2L V8 vs. 2027 6.6L V8
The 2026 6.2L produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The new 2027 6.6L produces 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft.
That's an increase of 61 horsepower and 41 lb-ft of torque.
GMC says the new 6.6L is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 it has offered in a Sierra 1500.
The new engines also use GM's sixth-generation Small Block architecture and feature both direct and port fuel injection.
If V8 performance is high on your Sierra shopping list, this may be the single biggest reason to compare the 2026 and 2027 trucks carefully.
4. The 2027 TurboMax Gets a Significant Power Increase
The TurboMax doesn't get replaced for 2027, but it does get substantially upgraded.
The 2026 TurboMax produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
The enhanced 2027 TurboMax produces 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft.
That's an increase of:
- 40 horsepower
- 25 lb-ft of torque
GMC says the updated engine receives a new turbocharger, upgraded fuel injection, redesigned pistons and improved thermal management.
It's still the TurboMax, but the 2027 version shouldn't be viewed as exactly the same engine experience as the 2026 truck.
5. The 3.0L Duramax Is the Familiar Choice
While the gasoline engine lineup changes significantly, the Duramax numbers remain familiar.
Both the 2026 and 2027 Sierra offer a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel producing:
- 305 horsepower
- 495 lb-ft of torque
For 2027, GMC also highlights the diesel's potential driving range. When paired with the available approximately 34-gallon fuel tank, GMC estimates more than 900 miles of highway driving range.
EPA fuel-economy ratings for the new 2027 Sierra were not yet available when GMC released its initial specifications, so we'll be watching those numbers as the truck gets closer to dealerships.
6. Another Important Change: All Four 2027 Engines Get a 10-Speed Automatic
There is another powertrain change that could easily get overlooked.
For 2027, GMC says all four Sierra 1500 engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
That's different from the 2026 lineup, where the TurboMax uses an 8-speed automatic while the available V8 and Duramax engines use a 10-speed automatic.
So even shoppers considering the TurboMax have another meaningful difference between the two model years.
7. 2027 vs. 2026 Sierra 1500 Towing Capacity
Maximum available trailering capability also increases.
- 2026 Sierra 1500: Up to 13,200 pounds when properly equipped
- 2027 Sierra 1500: Up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped
That's a 300-pound increase at the top of the range.
But maximum towing capacity should never be the only number you use when choosing a truck.
The actual trailering capability of an individual Sierra depends on the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, equipment, passengers and cargo.
If you're buying a Sierra specifically to pull a camper, boat, equipment trailer or another heavy load, match the truck to the trailer rather than assuming every Sierra can tow the advertised maximum.
8. The 2027 Sierra Interior Is Completely Redesigned
This may be the area where current Sierra owners notice the biggest difference during a test drive.
The 2026 Sierra already offers a technology-heavy cabin, particularly in upper trims. But GMC has reimagined the interior for the next-generation 2027 truck.
Depending on trim and equipment, the 2027 Sierra can offer:
- Panoramic sunroof
- Dynamic ambient lighting
- Real wood trim
- Forged wood in Denali Ultimate
- Carbon fiber in AT4X
- New MultiPro center console
- Dual wireless charging
- Available premium Bose audio systems
The new MultiPro center console adds storage and can provide an extended work surface inside the cabin.
If you're deciding whether to wait for a 2027, we'd recommend sitting in both generations once the new truck arrives. Interior differences can matter more in everyday ownership than a specification sheet suggests.
9. The 2027 Sierra Gets Much Larger Displays
The 2026 Sierra offers an available 13.4-inch diagonal center touchscreen and 12.3-inch diagonal Driver Information Center.
The 2027 Sierra takes another step forward.
Its new digital environment includes a:
- 16.3-inch diagonal center infotainment display
- 12.2-inch diagonal Driver Information Center
- Available 11.5-inch diagonal front passenger display
An available articulating version of the center display can move to reveal hidden storage behind it.
When equipped with the available screens, GMC says the Sierra can provide more than 60 inches of combined digital display area.
The new interface also integrates navigation, vehicle information, media, trailering features and available Super Cruise functionality.
10. Super Cruise Becomes Much More Available for 2027
Super Cruise is available on select 2026 Sierra configurations, but GMC expands the technology significantly for 2027.
Super Cruise with trailering capability is:
- Available on Elevation
- Standard on AT4
- Standard on AT4X
- Standard on Denali
- Standard on Denali Ultimate
That means buyers no longer have to move all the way to the highest luxury trims to get the technology.
For drivers who regularly travel longer distances between northeastern North Carolina, the Outer Banks and Hampton Roads, this could be an important difference between the two model years.
Super Cruise is a driver-assistance technology, not autonomous driving. Drivers must remain attentive and use the system only under appropriate operating conditions.
11. 2027 Sierra AT4 and AT4X vs. 2026
GMC also gives its off-road-focused trucks significant changes.
2027 Sierra AT4
The 2027 AT4 comes standard with the new 5.7L V8 and continues with a 2-inch factory lift and off-road-focused equipment.
GMC lists 34-inch all-terrain tires, heated and ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, Head-Up Display and Super Cruise with trailering capability among its standard equipment.
The 3.0L Duramax remains available.
2027 Sierra AT4X
The changes become even more noticeable with AT4X.
The 2027 AT4X gets:
- Standard 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel
- Available new 6.6L V8
- 35-inch mud-terrain tires
- 2-inch factory lift
- Multimatic DSSV dampers
- New Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers
- Front and rear electronic locking differentials
- New Baja drive mode
- Available underbody cameras
- Standard Super Cruise with trailering capability
The new Baja mode adjusts multiple vehicle systems for higher-speed off-road driving on loose and rough surfaces.
If you're specifically considering an AT4X, the 2027 model deserves a particularly close comparison with the outgoing truck.
12. 2027 Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate vs. 2026
Denali buyers get more than new styling.
2027 Sierra Denali
The new 5.7L V8 is standard, while the 6.6L V8 and 3.0L Duramax are available.
Standard features include Denali Premium Suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, Head-Up Display, Rear Camera Mirror, MultiPro center console, ambient lighting and Super Cruise with trailering capability.
2027 Sierra Denali Ultimate
The new 6.6L V8 becomes standard on Denali Ultimate.
Inside, GMC adds the new digital display environment along with features including:
- 16.3-inch center display
- 12.2-inch Driver Information Center
- 11.5-inch passenger display
- 14-way heated, ventilated and massaging front seats
- 16-speaker Bose premium audio system
- Panoramic sunroof
- Super Cruise
- Underbody cameras
- MultiPro Power Steps
If you're currently shopping a 2026 Denali or Denali Ultimate, the new engine and interior make this one of the most important trim-level comparisons between the two generations.

- Available pricing or incentives make the 2026 attractive
Reasons You Might Wait to See a 2027 Sierra
